Wowzers, this was fab. Imelda Staunton can do no wrong in my eyes and even when she's playing poisonous characters like Martha. She was sublime in this - easily the best performance I've ever seen on stage - but so were the other actors. Conleth Hill, who played her husband George and Luke Treadaway who played the young academic Nick were really strong as was the actress who played a very drunk Honey.
On face value the play is about marriage and the psychological damage Martha and George do to one another but it is also about ambition and the American Dream and the battle going on in academia between the old guard and the new blood.
I don't think I'm rash in saying THIS IS THE BEST THING WE'VE SEEN AT THEATRE CLUB
